California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Maurice Henry Hewlett was an English novelist and poet. He was born in Surrey and entered the family law practice in 1878, later called to the bar by the Inner Temple in 1890. He gave up law to concentrate on writing after the success of his first novel, The forest lovers, in 1898. This was followed by other novels and later poems and essays.
